Warner Norcross Attorney Homayune Ghaussi Honored by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

Michigan Lawyers Weekly has honored Homayune A. Ghaussi, a partner with the law firm Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, as one of 20 “Up & Coming Lawyers” for 2010.

Ghaussi, who concentrates his practice in litigation, was recognized in the annual edition that acknowledges the best of Michigan’s young attorneys. To be selected for the honor, Michigan Lawyers Weekly looks for young attorneys who have established a name for themselves earlier in their careers and are “poised for even greater accomplishments in the future.”

Ghaussi joined Warner Norcross in 2003 after completing a two-year clerkship with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He is regularly part of the litigation teams that handle complex commercial issues, property disputes, labor and employment and other matters for some of the law firm’s signature clients.

Michigan Super Lawyers named Ghaussi a Rising Star in 2009 and 2010. He became a Warner Norcross partner in January 2010 and has served on numerous committees at the firm.

Active professionally, he is a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and Oakland County Bar Association. He is also a graduate of Leadership Oakland.

Ghaussi holds a bachelor of science from Wayne State University and a doctor of jurisprudence magna cum laude from Wayne State University Law School.

A native of Afghanistan, Ghaussi now resides in Troy.

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP signs State Bar of Michigan Diversity and Inclusion Pledge

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP was among the first law firms in Michigan to sign the State Bar of Michigan’s new Pledge to Achieve Diversity and Inclusion.

Warner Norcross Managing Partner Douglas E. Wagner and Diversity Partner Rodney D. Martin represented the law firm at a signing reception during the State Bar of Michigan’s annual convention in Grand Rapids. Warner Norcross was one of several law firms in West Michigan that signed the pledge in conjunction with the event, which featured comments from Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly and State Bar President W. Anthony Jenkins.

“We are proud to be among the first law firms in West Michigan to sign the diversity pledge,” said Martin, who spoke earlier this summer at a workshop where the State Bar of Michigan introduced an initial draft of the pledge. “We congratulate the State Bar of Michigan for its leadership in encouraging the principles of diversity and inclusion within in our profession.”

The pledge notes that “diversity and inclusion are core values of the legal profession” that “require a sustained commitment” to achieve. The pledge says that law schools, law firms, judges, bar associations and others in the legal profession “must cooperatively work together” to achieve diversity and inclusion in the “education, hiring, retention and promotion of Michigan’s attorneys.”

Warner Norcross has a strong and lengthy track record in diversity initiatives, including:

  • Establishing and funding scholarship programs to encourage women and minorities to pursue legal studies and a career in the law
  • Expanding attorney recruiting efforts to ensure a diverse candidate pool of new associates
  • Supporting internal and community education initiatives, including a One Book, One Firm program and a mock trial program for high school students
  • Strengthening mentoring programs to ensure that all attorneys have the opportunity to succeed and grow in their practices
  • Publishing a Diversity and Inclusion Annual Report, now in its fifth year

The firm’s commitment to diversity has brought it numerous recognitions.  In 2009, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce awarded Warner Norcross its Diversity Visionary Award. In 2010, the firm received a designation as a “Full Diversity Partner,” by Partners for A Racism Free Community and was recognized in the August issue of Corp! Magazine as a “Diversity Focused Company.” The firm was also recently awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility for a second year in a row.
